Meteora is one of Greece's most astonishing sights, a cluster of vast sandstone pinnacles rising sheer from the Thessalian plain, each crowned by a centuries-old Orthodox monastery that seems to grow out of the living rock. Six of these clifftop retreats still function, reached today by steps carved into the stone rather than the old winch-and-net baskets the monks once used. Base yourself in Kalambaka, the busy little town at the foot of the rocks, or quieter Kastraki village tucked right beneath the towers. The monasteries sit on a single looping road, so hire a car, join an organised tour, or tackle the old monk paths on foot; the local bus is sparse. Each monastery closes on a rotating day of the week and keeps shorter hours in winter, so plan your loop around the closures. Modest dress is strictly enforced: men need long trousers, women must cover shoulders and wear a skirt below the knee, and wraps are lent at the entrance. Time your day for a sunset from Psaropetra, when the pinnacles glow amber and the valley falls into shadow below.
A full, walkable day in Meteora, free for everyone. Set your pace and start time.
Fuel up early; the monasteries open around 09:00 and the road is quietest before the first coach tours arrive.
Small and vertical with a short steep climb; usually closed on Fridays, so check before you go. Modest dress required, wraps lent at the door.
A long stone stairway leads up; closed on Tuesdays. Allow an hour for the katholikon and the refectory museum. Cover shoulders and knees.
Try the hilopites pasta and a chilled tsipouro; the terrace looks straight up at the pinnacles.
The easiest short climb of the clifftop group and beautifully frescoed; usually closed on Wednesdays. Skirts and wraps provided.
A footbridge crosses straight in with no steep steps, ideal if you dislike heights; usually closed on Mondays.
Arrive 30 minutes early to claim a spot on the rock as the pinnacles turn amber; bring a layer as it cools quickly once the sun drops.

The largest and oldest of the six, founded in the 14th century atop the highest pinnacle, with a jewel-box katholikon and an old refectory museum; a long stone stairway climbs to it and it closes on Tuesdays.

Long-running Kalambaka favourite with a garden terrace under the rocks, known for slow-cooked gida vrasti goat, grilled meats and honest house wine poured by the carafe.

The second-largest, reached by a short bridge and steps, famed for vivid 16th-century frescoes and the original rope-and-net tower once used to haul up supplies; usually closed on Fridays.

Dedicated to St Barbara and run as a nunnery, this photogenic monastery sits low on a slender rock with the easiest short climb of the group and dazzling frescoes; usually closed on Wednesdays.

The dramatic Agia Triada that starred in the Bond film For Your Eyes Only, reached by the most demanding climb up steps cut into the cliff face; usually closed on Thursdays but worth the effort for the views.

A tranquil nunnery, Agios Stefanos, with the easiest access of all as a footbridge crosses straight to it with no steep steps, making it ideal for anyone with vertigo; usually closed on Mondays.

The first monastery you reach from Kastraki, small and vertical over several floors with celebrated Theophanes the Cretan frescoes; a steep but short climb and usually closed on Fridays.
Perched above town for sweeping views of the pinnacles, a reliable stop for hilopites pasta, oven-baked lamb and a chilled tsipouro on the terrace at sunset.

Homely Kalambaka grill house beloved for its charcoal kokoretsi, hearty mixed grills and clay-pot bakes, with a warm welcome and generous portions.

A cosy, character-filled spot whose name means the fairy tale, serving creative Thessalian mezze, local cheeses and small plates paired with regional wines and tsipouro.

A more refined Kalambaka table putting a contemporary spin on Thessaly's mountain cooking, with slow-braised meats, foraged greens and a considered local wine list; reserve.
