Nafplio is the most elegant town in the Peloponnese and, for a few years after independence, the first capital of modern Greece. It wears its history in layers: a Venetian fortress crowning the rock, an Ottoman fountain tucked down a lane, neoclassical mansions with wrought-iron balconies spilling bougainvillea over marble stairways. The Old Town is small, pedestrianised and made for slow wandering, so leave the car and let the day find its own rhythm. Climb the 999 steps up Palamidi at dawn while the stone is cool, then reward yourself with a long Greek coffee on Syntagma Square. Afternoons are for the sea: the Arvanitia promenade curls around the headland to Karathona Beach, best walked as the light softens. Eat where locals eat, ordering fresh seafood by the harbour, mezedes with a carafe of local Nemea Agiorgitiko red, and a scoop of proper Italian gelato at Antica. Use Nafplio as a base too, with Mycenae, Epidaurus and Ancient Corinth all an easy drive away. Book weekends ahead, as Athenians adore it, and save the fortress for the morning cool.
A full, walkable day in Nafplio, free for everyone. Set your pace and start time.
Start early while the stone is cool and shaded; wear proper shoes and bring water, then explore the interlocking Venetian bastions and the views over the gulf.
Recover from the climb at To Kentrikon under the trees; order a slow Greek coffee and a galaktoboureko and watch the square wake up.
A cool, beautifully curated hour of costume and craft in an Old Town mansion; a good indoor stop as the day heats up.
A short walk from the Old Town to this pebble cove; go for a dip and dry off on the rocks before the coastal walk.
Follow the cliff-base path in the softening light; go as far as you like, as Karathona is about 45 minutes each way.
Climb up for the town's best free viewpoint as the sky turns and Bourtzi glows out in the bay.
Pick your fish from the ice and pair grilled sea bream with a chilled white; book a waterfront table in high season.

The vast Venetian citadel crowning the rock above town, reached by a famous flight of 999 steps; climb at dawn when the stone is cool and the light over the gulf is at its best.

A beloved Old Town institution under a canopy of vines on a stepped lane, serving hearty Peloponnesian classics like rabbit stifado and moussaka with a carafe of house red.

The little Venetian castle on an islet in the middle of the harbour, once a fortress and now the town's emblem; boats run out from the quay, and it is loveliest at sunset.

The oldest of the town's three castles, wrapping the low ridge above the Old Town; walk up for quiet ramparts and one of the finest free sunset viewpoints over the sea.

The marble-paved Constitution Square at the heart of the Old Town, ringed by Venetian and neoclassical facades; grab a cafe table and watch the evening volta unfold.

A small pebble cove tucked below Akronafplia, the closest swim to the Old Town; go early for a quiet dip, or start the seaside promenade to Karathona from here.

A gorgeous coastal path skirting the base of the cliffs from Arvanitia round to sandy Karathona Beach, about 45 minutes each way; walk it in the softer late-afternoon light.
Warm, long-running taverna just off Syntagma Square where the grilled lamb chops and slow-cooked greens draw as many locals as visitors, with tables spilling into the lane.

Authentic Roman gelato made fresh daily by a genuine Italian gelatiere, with pistachio and stracciatella that rival anything in Italy; expect a queue on warm evenings.
